A New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Factsheet has been mailed out. The factsheet summarizes the construction in the bulkhead area that is a part of the Rockaway Park Former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Site remediation. Construction is set to begin in October 2015 at the Rockaway Park Former MGP Site (the “Site”) for the Bulkhead Area phase of work. The Bulkhead Area is located immediately north of Beach Channel Drive between Beach 108th Street and the end of the Rockaway Freeway, north of the main site parcel. The bulkhead area is approximately 0.6 acres, and is currently owned by the City of New York. The remediation is being performed by National Grid, under the oversight of the NYSDEC and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

National Grid maintains a telephone hotline for the site, 718-403-3400, for any questions or comments from the community.

Projected Activities

Posillico, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, has placed the orders for equipment necessary to complete remediation activities. Further, National Grid’s consulting engineers and scientists have placed orders for and are scheduling the installation of the Community Air Monitoring Program (CAMP) equipment and other construction monitoring equipment. It is expected the equipment will begin arriving at the site during October.

For the week of October 12, 2015 through October 16, 2015, Posillico is scheduled to begin site mobilization activities which include delivery of equipment for remediation activities and construction support trailers. In addition, Posillico is scheduled to initiate above-grade site clearing activities in the bulkhead area.  National Grid’s consulting engineers will also install a portable CAMP and conduct the initial background (i.e., baseline) measurements.

Website Updates

Weekly, National Grid will provide activity updates for the neighbors of the Rockaway Park Former MGP Site. These updates will primarily consist of updates on the progress of construction activities in the bulkhead area.  The Key Documents section of this website will include the past website Weekly Updates and the CAMP Reports related to the remediation work.
